Organic milk proven to be far more nutritious than highly processed milk

"Cow's milk is for baby cows…processed milk is for nobody who desires optimal health."

That quote comes from HSI Panelist Allan Spreen, M.D., who's obviously no fan of milk, although he does allow that raw, unpasteurized milk provides beneficial nutrition that's mostly processed out of typical supermarket milk.

That nutritional difference is proven (again) in a new study from the UK's Newcastle University. Researchers took numerous milk samples from 25 commercial farms in August and October, and again in the following January, March and May. Some farms were organic (the cows grazed in pastures untreated with herbicides or pesticides, and cows were given no growth hormones and no antibiotics unless they were sick), and some farms used conventional production for high yield.

Analysis results:

  • Organic milk was higher in omega-3 fatty acids
  • Conventional milk was higher in less desirable omega-6 fatty acids
  • Organic milk was higher in vitamin E and carotenoids
  • Organic milk was higher in linolenic acid
  • Organic milk was higher in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)

As I've noted in previous e-Alerts, CLA has been shown to help increase lean body mass while also curbing cancer risk. But just as with omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, there are two basic types of CLA: CLA9, and the less desirable CLA10. During summer months when grazing is best, the CLA9 in organic milk was 60 percent higher than the CLA9 in conventionally produced milk.

You can read more about the benefits of CLA (as well as the difference between CLA9 and CLA10) in the e-Alert "Cattle Logic" (6/6/07).
